Active Metabolic Assessment

The Active Metabolic Assessment is a graded exercise assessment designed to help you better understand how your body responds to increasing exercise intensity. During the assessment, respiratory data is collected through a mask that measures the air you inhale and exhale while exercising. This information can help identify personalized training zones, fuel utilization patterns, exercise efficiency, and overall cardio-respiratory response.

While some individuals may reach a true VO2 Max during testing, many will instead reach a Peak VO2 or other valuable physiological markers that still provide meaningful insight into training, conditioning, and recovery. This assessment is about far more than a single VO2 Max number — it is designed to help reduce the guesswork surrounding exercise and performance.

Resting Metabolic Rate Assessment

The Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) Assessment is designed to estimate how many calories your body burns at rest to support essential daily functions such as breathing, circulation, recovery, and organ function. During the assessment, you will rest quietly while wearing a mask that measures the air you inhale and exhale in order to analyze metabolic activity and energy expenditure.

Unlike online calculators or wearable devices that rely on generalized formulas, population averages, or algorithm-based estimates, this assessment measures your individual respiratory data in real time to provide a more personalized estimation of resting energy expenditure. This information can help support decisions related to nutrition, recovery, body composition goals, and overall wellness while helping reduce the guesswork surrounding how you fuel and support your body.

What to expect on your assessment day

Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) Assessment

Your RMR Assessment will take place in a calm and quiet setting. You will rest comfortably in a seated or reclined position while wearing a mask connected to the metabolic system. During the assessment, it is important to remain relaxed, breathe normally, and minimize movement while respiratory data is collected. The assessment itself typically lasts about 10–20 minutes.

Active Metabolic Assessment

Your Active Metabolic Assessment will involve walking, jogging, running, cycling, or other graded exercise while wearing a mask connected to the metabolic system. Exercise intensity will gradually increase throughout the assessment while respiratory and metabolic data are collected in real time. Depending on the individual, the assessment may end due to fatigue, elevated effort levels, breathing demand, muscular fatigue, or achievement of the desired assessment endpoint. Most Active Metabolic Assessments typically last between 10–20 minutes, depending on the protocol and individual response.
